AVDoc Privacy Policy
This is the privacy policy for the AVDoc app ("AVDoc"), built by ControlBytes, LLC. ("ControlBytes," "we," "us"). Each app we build handles data differently, so AVDoc has its own policy rather than sharing one with our other software. It's designed around one rule: your documentation belongs to you and your company, not to us. For how the ControlBytes website itself handles data, see the website privacy policy.
What data exists, and who creates it
Using AVDoc, a technician creates records like: company and technician profiles, site and room/rack/device documentation, equipment photos, voice notes, issue logs, visit history, and local network scan results. All of it is entered or generated by the technician using the app. AVDoc doesn't collect anything on its own in the background.
Where it lives
Everything above is stored locally on the technician's iPhone, using Apple's on-device SwiftData storage. AVDoc does not operate a server or cloud backend, does not require an account to use, and does not automatically upload any of this data anywhere.
On-device processing
- Label scanning uses Apple's on-device Vision framework to read equipment labels from photos. This runs entirely on the phone.
- Voice note transcription uses Apple's on-device Speech framework with on-device-only recognition enforced. If on-device transcription isn't available for a given phone or language, the note is kept as audio only. It is never sent to Apple's servers or ours as a fallback.
- Network discovery probes the local network the phone is connected to, to find devices already on that network. It doesn't reach outside that local network or report results anywhere but the phone.
Sharing and export: always your choice
AVDoc includes features to export a full company backup, export a single site's data, and import data exported from another phone, along with generating PDF reports. All of these are actions the technician deliberately starts. The resulting file is handed off through whatever channel the technician picks (AirDrop, email, a messaging app, the iOS share sheet), and from that point on, it's subject to the privacy practices of that channel, not ours. We never see it.
Permissions AVDoc may request
- Camera: to take equipment photos and scan labels.
- Photo Library: as a fallback for label scanning on devices without a camera (e.g., the iOS Simulator), and to attach existing photos.
- Microphone & Speech Recognition: to record and transcribe voice notes.
- Local Network: to discover AV devices on the site's network.
- Face ID: to lock the app.
Each is requested only when the related feature is used, and each can be denied. AVDoc simply won't offer that specific feature if you say no.
No ads, no analytics, no data sale
AVDoc contains no advertising, no third-party analytics SDKs, and no tracking libraries. We don't sell or share technician or company data with anyone, because we don't have a copy of it to begin with.
Data retention and deletion
Data stays on the phone until the technician deletes a specific record, or deletes the app itself, which removes everything AVDoc stored (standard iOS behavior for local app data). Because ControlBytes never receives a copy, there's nothing on our end to separately delete.
Security
AVDoc offers a Face ID / passcode app lock. We recommend enabling it, since client site information and internal notes are only as protected as the phone they're stored on.
Children's privacy
AVDoc is a professional tool for AV technicians and is not directed at, or intended for use by, children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes (including if AVDoc's architecture changes to add optional cloud sync or AI features in the future), this page will be updated and the "Effective" date above will change accordingly.
