NightReceipts Privacy Policy
This is the privacy policy for the NightReceipts app ("NightReceipts"), built by ControlBytes, LLC. ("ControlBytes," "we," "us"). Each app we build handles data differently, so NightReceipts has its own policy rather than sharing one with our other software. It's designed around one rule: what you capture belongs to you, not to us. For how the ControlBytes website itself handles data, see the website privacy policy.
What data exists, and who creates it
Using NightReceipts, you can create records like: photos and videos, voice memos and quick notes, people you noted meeting, trusted contacts, and location pins you choose to save or share. All of it is entered or generated by you using the app. NightReceipts doesn't collect anything on its own in the background.
Where it lives
Everything above is stored locally on your iPhone, using Apple's on-device SwiftData storage. NightReceipts does not operate a server or cloud backend, does not require an account to use, and has no public profile or feed. Nothing is posted automatically, anywhere.
Voice memo transcription
Voice memos are transcribed using Apple's Speech framework. Unlike AVDoc, this isn't forced to stay strictly on-device, so depending on your phone and language, Apple may process the audio on its own servers rather than locally. Either way, that audio and its transcript go through Apple's systems, not ours, and we never receive a copy.
Safety features (Get Me Home)
The "Get Me Home" panel uses your phone's own Messages app and Maps app rather than a NightReceipts server. A "come get me" text or a shared location link opens the iOS Messages compose sheet pre-filled, but nothing sends until you tap Send yourself. Ride requests open Uber or Lyft's own app or website. Directions open Apple or Google Maps. None of this data passes through ControlBytes.
Permissions NightReceipts may request
- Camera: to take photos and videos.
- Microphone & Speech Recognition: to record and transcribe voice memos.
- Location: to label where a night happened and to share your location if you choose to.
- Calendar: to check going-out plans against your schedule, if you use that feature.
- Reminders: to create a follow-up reminder if you ask it to.
- Notifications: for check-in timers and morning recap alerts.
- Face ID: to lock the app.
Each is requested only when the related feature is used, and each can be denied. NightReceipts simply won't offer that specific feature if you say no.
No ads, no analytics, no data sale
NightReceipts contains no advertising, no third-party analytics SDKs, and no tracking libraries. We don't sell or share your data with anyone, because we don't have a copy of it to begin with.
Data retention and deletion
You can set nights to auto-delete after a chosen number of days, or delete a single night, or everything, yourself at any time. Deleting the app itself removes everything NightReceipts stored (standard iOS behavior for local app data). Because ControlBytes never receives a copy, there's nothing on our end to separately delete.
Security
NightReceipts offers a Face ID / passcode app lock. We recommend enabling it, since the contents of a night are only as protected as the phone they're stored on.
Children's privacy
NightReceipts is intended for adult use and is not directed at, or intended for use by, children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes (including if NightReceipts' architecture changes to add optional cloud sync or AI features in the future), this page will be updated and the "Effective" date above will change accordingly.
